Lanzarote | Development update 3

Hello and welcome to the third and final development update for FLY X Simulations Lanzarote! Firstly, we do apologise for the lack of communication from us, leading to some people even believing the project had been cancelled. We are grateful for your concern and have good news in that the project is very much alive and much progress has been made since we last published an update. As the project nears completion, we would like to give one last update containing a rundown on our progress, news about release such as date etc. and a celebratory group flight down to Lanzarote. Keep reading for further details on all of the subjects stated above.

PROGRESS

So, what have we been up to in the past few months?

Well we have fully re-textured the main terminal of Lanzarote Airport with much higher resolution textures, which has greatly increased the quality and realism of the terminal building itself. Furthermore, all of the ground markings have been completed again using HD textures and PBR materials and we have added Ground wear and dirt bringing the apron to life and making it appear far more appealing and realistic, mimicking the real airport. We have added apron clutter across the main area of the airport creating a busy and bustling environment any international holiday airport carries with it. As well as this, we have finished modelling all of the buildings within the vicinity of the airport and some structures surrounding the airport including the car park and coach park for the airport. Another feature is vast amount of palm trees, which are a small addition to the scenery yet have a very significant effect on how the scenery is portrayed creating a hot and holiday like environment surrounding the airport.

 

What features are we yet to complete?

Although the scenery is mostly complete, we have a few more features which we are yet to complete. Firstly, we are still placing bushes and shrubs around the airport and are still adding additional wear, dirt and cracks to the apron area. Furthermore there is some subtle ground features such as repaired apron cracks, manhole covers and drains. However, despite this, the scenery is almost fully complete and ready for release.

Pricing:

So, firstly, the most frequently asked question (besides release date) is “How much will it be?” Well we have some good news! After much careful consideration and debating amongst ourselves, we have decided to release Lanzarote as a freeware product! It will be available on the FLY X Simulations website at https://flyxsim.com/ and from the Xplane.org forums at https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/profile/539191-fly-x/. We hope you are pleased and perhaps surprised by this decision but we thought this was the best thing to do in our current position.

 

Release date:

Our intended release date is Saturday 3rd August, in the morning, a specific time will be posted on the Fly X Simulations website closer to the release date, just before the group flight (more details below)

To celebrate the release of the Lanzarote scenery on the Saturday 3rd August we will hold a group flight on the VATSIM network down to Lanzarote (GCRR) from London Gatwick (EGKK). The Flight will be live streamed at https://www.twitch.tv/flyx_live/ . Full details below

Lanzarote | Development update 2

Hello, welcome to the third development update from FLY X SIMULATIONS.

Today we have some previews and news for you on how the Lanzarote project is coming alone.

In case anyone was wondering, yes, the project is still very much alive! It has been almost eight months since the last development update, for that I apologies, going forward I will try to put more development updates out (maybe every 2 months or something like that) to keep people up to date on the project.

Here’s a rundown of how everything’s coming along

Terminals

The main exterior modelling for the terminals is more or less complete, I still need to add finishing touches with things like air-conditioning units, ducts and objects like chairs and tables on the outside areas, but that main structure (including texturing) for both terminals is complete, this was a major part of the project and something that has taken several attempts to get right (I am not someone who is apposed to starting from scratch on something if I don’t feel it’s high enough quality)


Other buildings

As with the previous development update on Lanzarote I have been carrying on working on the dozens of smaller buildings and other complexes that make up the airport. These are almost all complete, apart from a few small ones and one quite big one.



Ground textures

In the previous Lanzarote development update I stated that I hadn’t done much work on the ground textures, this has now changed. I have completed a lot of the markings such as the various painted lines around the airport. These much like the asphalt and concrete textures use PBR technology to provide a realistic and almost 3D look to them. One thing that still needs to be done is the dirt and damage that is on the apron, this leads to a real and lived in look.

Going forward

I presume many people will want to know a release date, I initially planned to release before the end of 2018, obviously I didn’t make this date. This was due to several factors, most notable was not anticipating the complexity of the project. I have never developed something of this size, quality and complexity and it is a constant learning curve for me. I don’t want to state a release date of any sorts in case circumstances change and I can’t meet it. All I will say is that the pace has been picked up dramatically recently and everything is starting to come together. I have a goal in mind for the date, but I’m not ready to say anything yet. As the project nears closer to completion more and more will be revealed about when it’ll be released.

Kittila announcement

Hello, welcome to another development update.

One of the most notable changes for FLY X Simulations since the last development update is the website! Yes, I now have a website, this will act as a place to post information about projects and as a sort of general hub for FLY X Simulations.

You may remember that last year I released a freeware Rovaniemi for something that I call “the Xmas project”. The Xmas project is a freeware scenery that I do every year that is themed around Christmas and is sort of a way of giving back to the community as a thanks for all the support.

Last year it was Rovaniemi which is one of the main airports to serve the popular Christmas destination of Lapland and this year it is Kittila which is another one of the airports to serve Lapland.

Work so far has been going well, I am about 2 weeks into it and have completed most of the ground textures and markings, some of the snow effects, and almost fully modeled the terminal and tower (which is the main bulk of the modeling).

This image uses a freeware winter mod available on Xplane.org that will be linked with the release of the scenery. It changes the Xplane ground textures too look snowy. My scenery only includes the snow within the airport perimeter.

It is important to remember that these images are of a half developed scenery, things may look a little bare and empty, but I assure you that there is a lot to be added in.

Release date

The release date is currently set for the 8th of December at mid-day UTC. I am very confident I will make this release date.

The scenery will be available on the Xplane.org forum and will not require any object libraries at all.

Lanzarote

Work on Lanzarote continues, there will be more information and previews in another development update in early January 2019.

Lanzarote | Development update 1

Today I have for you a development update on my Xplane 11 Lanzarote airport scenery.

Its been several months since this project was announced and there have been many developments regarding it that I will share with you today.

 

Terminal 1

First of all, you may remember when I announced this project I previewed a render of terminal 1... well that has been completely remodeled from scratch. I believed the quality was nowhere near what I wanted it to be, plus I found out due to additional research that some parts were inaccurate. At the moment I have completed about 90% of the actual modeling and there is still all of the texturing to do. Below are some texture-less renders that show the modeling of terminal 1.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is something I have only recently started developing, so far, all the modeling is almost complete, and a lot of the texturing is also complete. Below are some partially textured renders that show the modeling for terminal 2.

Other buildings

Recently I have also been focusing on modeling and texturing the other buildings that make up Lanzarote airport. These include things like hangers, garages, cargo terminals, and airport offices. I have fully modeled and textured about half of the buildings so far. Below are some renders of some of the buildings I have made so far.

Ground textures

There hasn’t been so much work done when it comes to ground textures so far, however, I have been doing some experimentation with using ‘normal maps’. These basically make it so that the texture isn’t just a 2D image but instead has little bumps that catch the sunlight and make it look like a material. Below are some images that compare an asphalt texture both with and without a ‘normal map’. The effect is fairly subtle but adds a nice feel to the experience.

Ground markings

The scenery will have custom ground markings, no work has been done on these yet. These will also utilize the aforementioned ‘Normal maps’.

 

When will it be out?

As I mentioned in the announcement several months ago problems tend to crop up, especially when developing something for a flight sim, this has happened to me throughout the past few months and will no doubt happen even more as development goes on, it’s just an inevitable part of developing something.

Because of this I am not going to give a release date, I can tell you that it will almost certainly (unless my computer blows up and I have some sort of massive data loss of all my backups or something like that (probably shouldn’t tempt fate)) tell you that it will release before the end of the year, and it MAY end up being sooner than that, but I promise nothing as I won't make promises that I don’t that for a fact that I can keep.

All I will say is that development is going well.

 

Conclusion

In conclusion, I’d like to thank people for their interest in this project. As you may know, I am a relatively new developer, I haven’t done that many projects before and they have all been freeware and nowhere near the magnitude of this project. Over the past 6 months of development, I have learnt a lot about scenery development. I have learnt many new skills and techniques that are enabling me to make the best scenery I can. I am pleased with how the development is going and feel that it will be a high-quality product.

Another development update with in-sim screenshots will be posted in the not too distant future, this will also provide you with more information about the release, how it will work, what will happen leading up to it, and a much better idea of when it will be. So be sure to stay tuned for that.

Lanzarote Announcement

Hello, today I am announcing my first payware airport scenery, Lanzarote (GCRR). If you are unfamiliar with Lanzarote it is the northernmost canary island and is a very popular holiday destination for Europe. The destination is very popular with plane spotters and aviation enthusiasts due to its runways closeness to a public beach and path.

I started work on this scenery a few weeks ago and progress is going very well, there is still a lot to do however I have already made some major components of the scenery (renders bellow).

The scenery will most likely be sold on the Xplane.org store and will be priced similarly to other scenery of this size.

As for a release date, I don't really have an idea of when it will be ready (unexpected problems tend to crop up) but it will most likely be out this year, probably around summer.
